The Dutch Chess Problem Society (Nederlandse Bond van Schaakprobleemvrienden, NBvS) was founded on January 18, 1931 by H.G.M. Weenink and M. Niemeijer, in the presence of some thirty other chess problem friends, including F.W. Nanning and P. Feenstra Kuiper. The happening took place in the National Chess Building (Nationaal Schaakgebouw) in The Hague.
The Society’s aim is to promote the composition and solving of chess problems, including endgame studies. After the Society was founded it initially used the magazine of the Dutch Chess Society (Tijdschrift van de Nederlandse Schaakbond) as its means of publication. It is only after WWII that the Society starts publishing its own magazine, Probleemblad, which still appears today.
The Society also holds bi-annual general meetings, which include solving contests, such as the Henk Hagedoorn solving tourney (prior to the fall meeting in November) and the Dutch Open Solving Championship (prior to the spring meeting in March, traditionally held in Nunspeet).

The membership fee is €35 per year for members of the Dutch Chess Society (Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond, KNSB). Dutch non KNSB members pay €50 per year. The surcharge is an obligatory payment to the KNSB, to which our Society is affiliated. Besides several facilities offered to the Society by the KSNB, members also receive the KNSB magazine Schaakmagazine in return. For junior members (of age 18 and under) the amounts are €24 and €39, respectively.
KNSB & FIDE
The Dutch Chess Problem Society is a special subsociety of the KNSB. Dutch members of the NBvS automatically become members of the KNSB if they are not yet members of a chess club.
Internationally chess problemists are united in the FIDE Permanent Commission for Chess Composition (PCCC). This commission is responsible for, among other things, appointing IGM’s, IM’s and FM’s, for in chess composition titles can also be obtained, both for composing and for solving chess problems. The commission also appoint judges and oversees the Codex.
The awarding of composition titles is based on the number of publications in the FIDE Album. Once every three to four years an album is issued containing the best chess problems of the previous period. Also, each year composers are appointed world champion in certain genres.
